Coordinating conjunctions join two clauses or other items without establishing a logical hierarchy between them. German coordinating conjunctions, und, aber, oder, have no effect on the internal word order of clauses.
| Sie nehmen die Rolltreppe da runter und Sie laufen dann eine zweite Treppe hinunter. |
| You take this escalator down, and then you go down another escalator. |
| Ich kann später gehen, oder wir können jetzt gehen. |
| I can go later, or we can go now. |
| Sie kann jetzt gehen, aber ich habe keine Zeit dazu. |
| She can go now, but I don’t have the time for that. |
A comma separates the two coordinating conjunctions if the subject of each clause is different.
